Roadmap to Restoration & Re-Open

Phase 1: 6 months / Year 1 – Foundations & Permissions

The first stage focuses on setting the groundwork. Feasibility studies will confirm viability, environmental impact, and long-term sustainability. Site preparation begins, alongside formal permissions with Argyll & Bute Council and Historic Environment Scotland, ensuring the project aligns with heritage standards and planning regulations.

Phase 2: Year 1 & 2 – StarLink Ground Station & Agri-Tech (Smart-Agri)

Phase 2 positions Glenbarr as digital infrastructure and Smart-Agri hub – a dedicated site where research groups, developers, and Agri-tech companies – trial and test robotic farming technologies prior to full-scale production, ensuring the estate benefits from long-term, sustainable lease income.

  • The first Starlink ground station x 9 satelites will be installed, each satellite is approx; 2–3 m (6.5–10 ft) in height.
  • By the start of year 2, if not sooner = Smart-Agri pilot trials will be launched. These early projects immediatley begin generating revenue streams, while demonstrating how modern technology can operate alongside – and support, heritage preservation.

Phase 2: Glenbarr Abbey – (Agri-Tech / Smart-Agri Trials & Testing)

Phase 3: Year 3 – Scaling & Revenue Growth

With proof of concept established, both streams – digital infrastructure and agri-tech trials – will scale up. This stage aims to reach a sustainable annual revenue of providing a reliable financial foundation to fund restoration without reliance on grants, loans, schemes or partnerships.

Phase 4: Year 3/4: Restoration Works Commence

Major restoration begins on Glenbarr Abbey itself: roof replacement, re-wiring, stone and window repairs, and structural reinforcement. This is the phase where all revenue generated over year 1 -3 – directly funds the complete physical repair, historically accurate renovation, restoration and renewal  – of Glenbarr Abbey, to the highest of standards.
