Glenbarr Abbey’s: Self-Sustaining New Future
The Future’s Forged in Land & Sky
There are places in this world that are more than stone and slate. Glenbarr Abbey, in the village of Glenbarr, Kintyre– is one of them. Built in the 18th century by Colonel Alasdair MacAlister – descendant of the ancient Lords of the Isles. A gift to the MacAlisters of Scotland. A seat of heritage, rooted in the soil of Kintyre, tied to the bloodlines of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, and every soul who fought for her cause, rose for Scotland, or fell in her name.

Duty, Not Decoration
Glenbarr is bound by Promise and the Oaths of 84′. a privilege not of title, but of trust. We are the inheritors of what was passed on through time. Glenbarr Abbey stands at a crossroads – its future demands action, not silence.
Glenbarr Abbey cannot be left to decay – while we remain silent. Our ancestors did not fight for comfort—they fought for continuity. For land, for legacy, for future kin.
Being Scottish, means we do not give up, we do not give in.
We owe more than memory. We owe movement. Lets not allow Glenbarr Abbey to be resorted to ruins. It is already on the Buildings at Risk Register.

The New Path Forward…
What began as a small personal project a few months ago, to honour my Grandad, his service and his sacrifice – has drawn me deeper. In covering Clan Thomson, and then Clan MacAlister, something called me back to Glenbarr.
What I found wasn’t just a castle in decline – I saw something others might not see: a future that brings Glenbarr Abbey back. A path has been seen, and passed on. A solution that can restore Glenbarr not just in stone, but in stature. Not merely as a memory, but as a living monument. I see a future where the Promise and Oath’s that bind Glenbarr Abbey, are honored and upheld once again.
The Conditions, Commitments & Oaths – of Glenbarr Abbey
Glenbarr Abbey was gifted on the condition that it be maintained as a Clan Centre, a living repository of MacAlister heritage and Scottish history. This must be established and provided, as per the Oath that binds Glenbarr Abbey. This includes:

The Late Laird Glenbarr with Lady Glenbarr 🏴
- (1) To purchase and maintain Glenbarr Abbey: and such other Clan Lands and buildings as shall from time to time be transferred to the Trust.
- (2) To preserve for Clansmen and for the general public: and as an adjunct to the Clan Lands any furniture, pictures and other chattels of historic or artistic interest.
- (3) The formation of a Clan Museum and its subsequent maintenance within the existing structure provided by the Glenbarr Abbey itself for the purposes of fostering Clan sentiment and interest and the education of members of the Clan and the general public in the history of the Highland Clans and Clan Alasdair in particular and the collection and preservation of records and traditions and objects of historic interest bearing on the history of Clan Alasdair.
- (4) To provide a benevolent fund for Clansmen in distress and the widows and orphans of Clansmen.
- (5) To provide funds to assist in the education of Clansmen and to provide scholarships at schools or universities for the sons and daughters of Clansmen.
- (6) To provide funds to assist in the discovery and preservation of archaeological sites on the Kintyre peninsular and on the Clan Lands in General, to foster interest in the local history of Kintyre and the Clan Lands in General and to assist in the creation of a Heritage Trail in the Clan Lands.
Today, the estate is overseen by the Clan MacAlister Charitable Trust. The Trust bears full responsibility for its upkeep, restoration, and relevance.

Preserve History, Protect Heritage – Uphold The Promise
The path forward has been laid out – a three-to-five year, staged rollout and implementation plan designed to secure Glenbarr’s future without compromising its past. This proposed plan meets the realities of the present – one shaped by technological advancement and modern needs – beyond limitations of the 1984 Oath.
This is about preservation not as performance, but as action and utilisation. For Glenbarr to endure, we must evolve – and in doing so, ensure that this legacy is not only remembered, but lived, loved and treasured as those before us, have so honorably done.
The proposed path forward would include;
Five revenue streams; the two main revenue streams are independent of tourism – and resilient to any future government lockdowns.
- (1) Preserve Glenbarr Abbey with dignity, integrity, and enduring care, including all horticultural landmarks of the estate and Abbey.
- (2) Honor the sacred role of Glenbarr Abbey as the spiritual home of Clan MacAlister and a living monument to Scotland’s past.
- (3) Protect Glenbarr Abbey lands and legacy from false portrayal, misuse, or commercial distortion in all digital and phyical forms.
- (4) Safeguard, protect and showcase Glenbarr Abbey and Clan McAlister historical treasures for future generations.
- (5) Fully repair / replace: all roofing issues, structural issues, full rewiring – and fully restore Glenbarr Abbey to its rightful stature and glory.

- (6) Rebuild and improve the museum/visitor centre, revive its spirit with an emmersive experience, to be interactive eventually.
- (7) Create a digital experience museum available globally online – 24/7, such as; Tower Museum, Hastings Digital Museum and National Portrait Gallery.

- (8) Digitize museum collections, create an online repository, enhancing accessibility, preserves heritage, and reaches a wider audience.
- (9) Collaborate with Educational Institutions, partner with local schools and universities to develop educational programs and workshops, both online and on-site.
- (10) Develop Mobile App: a location-aware app that offers audio tours, historical narratives, and interactive elements tied to specific areas within the Abbey.
- (11) Protect and register all digital property rights, Clan trademarks and copyrights – for going forward in the digital era.
- (12) Clan MacAlister members heritage centre, members wing accomodation, board room and MacAlister Hall for ceremonial and Clan events.
- (13) Create a dignified future through modern, low-impact innovation – such as smart agricultural research.
- (14) Utilisation of loaction and gods great sky (not with windmills or solar) – to financially secure the Abbey without sacrificing its soul.
Glenbarr Abbey Current Condition: Decaying and Derelict
Since the closure of the Castle, museum / visitor centre in 2017, no door has opened to the Castle or the grounds, which includes; an expansive 17,000 acre estate that came with Glenbarr Abbey, comprised of; agricultural land, woodlands, waterfalls and rivers. For over seven years, Glenbarr Abbey has stood empty – its once-proud roof now failing, its structure compromised, and the fabric of the building succumbing to time and weather. Glenbarr Abbey is now officially listed on Scotland’s Buildings at Risk Register.
Yet this reality falls short of what was once envisioned –
and what the original Oath asked of us.
The Reality of 2025 Scotland
When Glenbarr was gifted to Clan MacAlister, it was to be preserved, protected, and honoured as a living centre of heritage- a home for all MacAlisters and a monument to our collective past. Let’s be a realistic this is 2025 – and Scotland. It’s impossible to keep the lights on, roofs up and doors open – with the taxes we’ve got, added with the taxes for historic buildings and estates of this stature – and the cost of living and running of such a sizable property. That’s the cold reality.
From property taxes, council taxes and any other tax you can probably think of, beautiful history like this, ends up taxed out of existence. No matter how much, it’s wished otherwise. Especially when reliant on ‘public’ facing revenue streams, it becomes impossible in the current climate of the past decade+. However, there is still hope for Glenbarr Abbey, it has not fell too far.
I hope that this ‘New Path Forward’ is considered, this is possible, viable and sustainable beyond belief. Safeguarding Clan history, Scottish history, our heritage and the ancestral home of Clan McAlister, for hundreds of years to come.
While re-enactments and commemorations carry symbolic value, it’s the foundations – the land, the buildings, the very heartbeat of our heritage – that now go undefended. The Castle and Estate now face visible decline, a call for collective restoration, not reproach. Homage is fine, but not without honor – honor for those who passed on this legacy. And respect to faithfully uphold the Oath.
Where there’s a will – there’s a way. We do not inherit heritage to admire it- we inherit it, to protect it.
As the original gift declared, “it is up to us all to try and maintain it.”
That time is now.

NOTE: This project is not affiliated with any existing Clan organisation. Views expressed, ideas and passion are personal – and entirely my own.
Let Glenbarr be graced again – not with pageantry, but with purpose.
There is no honour without duty. It is an honour to bear the Clan McAlister name – and for me, a duty to uphold it.
